Put God's In His / Her Place

Ultimate Reality simply Is. And will Be. Reality, God, will not change. Religion, organized, or not, cannot change the Nature of God. Ultimate Reality is not subject to what humans think it is.

God doesn’t care what humans call Him. God doesn’t care where He is worshipped. God doesn’t care if He is worshipped. And God doesn’t care how He is worshipped.

God is not male, nor is She female. I have been told that in Hebrew, “Elohim” is translated as “Lord”. “El” is “God”. “Eloh” is God with a feminine determiner, or “Goddess”. Add the “im” as a plural, but a masculine plural. It is easy to see that the early Hebrews were just as confused about God’s sexuality as we are today.

Nothing has substantially changed in our concepts of God in about 3,000 years. In fact, my use of the masculine pronoun as a referral to God is an error. To the extent that at least half of the time I do not use the feminine pronoun.

I am the victim of my language which has poor choices for non-sexual pronouns. I cannot find it in myself to call God, It. I am the victim of my own culture. I do recognize this failing. I am also lazy and find doubling of the pronouns ( He / She ) confusing at best.

If God is feminine, She will not care if I use the He pronoun instead. God is above such things as sexuality. Sex and sexuality are tools of God, not a part of God. God doesn’t care if S/He is cursed, or offered prayers. These things are not part of Him.

A cathedral, a church, even a cheap storefront on skid row is not God’s place. Any constructed temple by any name, or any design is not God’s place. God does not have a place, except His Universe. He can choose to be everywhere and anywhere, and does. God’s only "place" is in you.

A better choice for a physical place to worship is anywhere you find the solace of your own mind. If you can seek out a place to offer prayer. If you can seek out a place to worship God. If you choose to do so – and remember God doesn’t care if you do or not. You will still be doing God’s work. God’s only "place" is in you.

A good choice could be your bed, a forest, or a meadow. A good choice could be a hill, a sand dune, or your back yard. A good choice could be a mountain peak, an island in a lake, or anywhere you find the solace of your own mind. All of these places which I have suggested imply that you should be seeking isolation from others. This need not be the case. God’s only "place" is in you.


Even in a crowd, or in a prison cell, you are in constant contact with your soul, and God. It may be more difficult for you, but it is not impossible. All you need to do is concentrate more. God’s only "place" is in you.

Experience, if you can, the wind. Experience the smell and colors of flowers. Experience the warmth of sunshine, and rain. Experience the coolness of a tree’s shade in the heat of midday. Experience the melody of breezes through tree branches. Enjoy the tinkle of a babbling brook. Feel the feathery fall of snow while alone and speaking from your heart and mind to Deity, or God. God’s only "place" is in you.

One experience is not necessarily better than another. I believe that the extreme social nature of human beings has simply been recognized for a very long time. I think that the quickest answer to the distraction of others has been voluntary isolation.

Just try to catalog, or list, all of the sounds, including speech, that a group of human beings can make. Grumbling, snoring, farting, scratching, breathing, groaning, hacking, snuffling, mumbling, talking, etc. This is while they’re asleep. You’ll soon understand about the distractions of others if you spend five minutes around a group of senior citizens, teenagers, or five year olds.

At the time you are being marched to the gallows you are constantly in contact with God. While waiting for the surgeon’s knife, or in the middle of deadly hand-to-hand combat you are constantly in contact with God. As you are being swept over the great waterfall, or being attacked by large hungry animals you are constantly in contact with God. Facing a sword wielding ninja team and your personal immediate appointment with death, you are constantly in contact with God. God’s only "place" is in you. For He is within you, for as long as you draw breath.
