What went wrong with the Early Church

By: Rev. Robert Vergeson D.D.

What Went Wrong with the Early Church of Christ?

When we read and study the early church in the New Testament we get a social model of the first Christians and the community they strove to create around their faith and teachings of Christ. We learn the difficulties and persecutions of the early Christians not only by the Romans, but the Jewish establishment and temples alike. Needless to say that the disciples to whom Christ instructed, were constantly in fear of reprisal and condemnation of death for following Christ. This atmosphere created a very close network of believers who met in secret to hear the story of Christ by his disciples who related the miracles and wonders they had seen while they walked with Christ. The Early Church wasn’t brick and mortar, but blood and flesh, the individual followers of Christ.

Acts 14:26-28
Finally, they returned by ship to Antioch of Syria, where their journey had begun and where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work they had now completed. [27] Upon arriving in Antioch, they called the church together and reported about their trip, telling all that God had done and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles, too. [28] And they stayed there with the believers in Antioch for a long time.

The church is polarized by Fear

Saul of Tarsus a zealous Pharisee, having gained letters for arrest and return of all Christians to Jerusalem, was an individual who the earlier Christians feared the most. For Saul had the power and conviction to pursue them unto death.

Acts 9:1-2
Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath. He was eager to destroy the Lord's followers, so he went to the high priest. [2] He requested letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, asking their cooperation in the arrest of any followers of the Way he found there. He wanted to bring them—both men and women—back to Jerusalem in chains.

Because of these persecutions of Christians, the early church was constantly on the move with its leaders traveling and meeting in secret with those who where followers of Christ. These meeting places often were cellars, attics, and remote area’s of civilizations. Yet, despite the dangers of these meetings, the Christian church grew into communities of believers who lived together in secret with their beliefs. Now we need to take a look at communal living as it was in the early church. By virtue of the sparsity of large cities, many villages of those days were small groups of tradesmen, farmers, and sailor, depending on location and trade routes, lived simple secluded lives, closed networks of families sharing a communal life. In the larger cities & communities, neighborhoods were formed around a trade, or occupation. Therefore you would have tanners in what area of the community, potters in another, bakers in another and so forth. Since trades and skills where passed on from father to son, these neighborhoods were made up of several generations relations and family members.

With the early church and Christian believers, they naturally navigated together into secret communities, often whole families converted guarding well their conversion to Christians. These families met in secret constantly in fear of exposure to the Roman guards and those who sought to persecute them. It wasn’t until the persecutions ended, that these communities thrived openly in worship, meeting in their homes, often taking turns to meet and worship in different homes. There were no center’s of worship, buildings set aside to gather in, buildings dedicated solely to worship Christ in. These early Christians kept to small groups of worshipers to avoid large meetings that may draw unwarranted attention to themselfs. But despite these small congregations, Christianity grew spreading throughout the Roman empire reaching into many cultures and nationalities. By virtue of these small groups, was it possible to avoid arrest and death for being a follower of Christ.

Acts 4:3-4
They arrested them and, since it was already evening, jailed them until morning. [4] But many of the people who heard their message believed it, so that the number of believers totaled about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

Acts 21:19-21
After greetings were exchanged, Paul gave a detailed account of the things God had accomplished among the Gentiles through his ministry. [20] After hearing this, they praised God. But then they said, "You know, dear brother, how many thousands of Jews have also believed, and they all take the law of Moses very seriously.

Acts 16:3-5
so Paul wanted him to join them on their journey. In deference to the Jews of the area, he arranged for Timothy to be circumcised before they left, for everyone knew that his father was a Greek. [4] Then they went from town to town, explaining the decision regarding the commandments that were to be obeyed, as decided by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem. [5] So the churches were strengthened in their faith and grew daily in numbers.

1 Cor. 5:4-6
in the name of the Lord Jesus. You are to call a meeting of the church, and I will be there in spirit, and the power of the Lord Jesus will be with you as you meet. [5] Then you must cast this man out of the church and into Satan's hands, so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved when the Lord returns. [6] How terrible that you should boast about your spirituality, and yet you let this sort of thing go on. Don't you realize that if even one person is allowed to go on sinning, soon all will be affected?

But the early church was more then just a building to meet in, the church was the people regardless of location. When Paul arrived at Antioch, it is not told that he went to the church, but rather he called the church together. Through out Paul’s travel, it is clear that he meet with the followers of Christ, strengthening their faith and the church grew daily. Physical buildings didn’t grow daily or rise up, but spiritual temples of God’s church. The early church was the living physical and spiritual flesh of the believers of Christ. These living stones made up the church and not four walls, windows, and pews. Therefore God is the architect of the living church, Christ is its cornerstone, and we are the finished product the church.

1 Peter 2:3-6
now that you have had a taste of the Lord's kindness. [4] Come to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God's temple. He was rejected by the people, but he is precious to God who chose him. [5] And now God is building you, as living stones, into his spiritual temple. What's more, you are God's holy priests, who offer the spiritual sacrifices that please him because of Jesus Christ. [6] As the Scriptures express it,

"I am placing a stone in Jerusalem, a chosen cornerstone, and anyone who believes in him
will never be disappointed."

Chaining the Word of God

When we look at the history of the church known then, the Roman Catholic church was first recognized as the official Roman church in AD 313. The church before then from the time of Peter until Rome accepted Christianity 300 years after the death of Christ, Christian fellowship were people still hiding in catacombs and cellars from persecutions. The focus from the spiritual church to the brick and mortar church we have today, followed that 300 year period when Christian’s could openly worship and meet throughout the Roman empire. The focus then changed from the spiritual church, the flesh and body of the church to the brick and mortar church. At first I am sure that such buildings were still a group of believers openly worshiping in their homes, town squares, and the like. Then as the Roman empire embraced the formal organization of the church and the church became a power house of its own, then these common personal meeting places were replaced by large cathedrals and churches where believers left their homes and worshiped as a group under the formal leadership of the Roman Catholic church.

One might say that it was at this time that the spiritual temple of God was replaced with marble, silk trappings, and Gold trim as well as the bureaucracy of governing a very large body of believers. By this was the chaining of the Word of God accomplished. This very bureaucracy of holy orders and ranks within the church created a structure that has replaced the spiritual temple of God with a focus that all spiritual aspects of believers of Christ must go through a system of religious sacraments, rules of worship, and come under the hierarchy of church leadership over their daily life. Rather then being a personal, spiritually and physically the temple of God, our early Christians now must pass through a door into a materialistic temple to find God chained to its alters and the word of God, reserved only to the holy orders of men and bureaucracy. I do not believe that this was God’s purpose when he placed a living cornerstone in Jerusalem for us to believe in. Therefore the early church that begun with the death of Christ, has evolved into a distortion of God’s spiritual church and the purpose he intended.

Post renaissance of the Church

Through the renaissance of the early church and up through today, Christianity has become a universal body of believers who have split and split again into various denominations and groups each founded on the need to either get back to the early church, and rid themselves of internal corruptions and stagnation of the faith. Church history has shown how politics, wealth, and ignorance has created these needs to split from the Roman church, and seek out better pastures for their flock of believers. In the post-renaissance of the Roman Church, great spiritual leaders have risen to guide these new churches and groups away from the Holy Roman church and its multi-layer of holy orders, sacraments and internal control of the Christian faith. These new spiritual leaders have redirected believers to have a closer relationship with Christ without the trappings and Hierarchy of the Holy Roman church, offering believers a route back to basics. This unchaining of the Word of God, brought the right and freedom of believers to own and read the very word of God and know for itself what the word spoke of Christ and Gods intent. This post-renaissance created new denominations of believers who split from the Holy Roman Church, opening doors for new converts and old alike.

We now have so many denominations and Christian organization, each teaching a different focus or bible truth, that the real church of Christ is far from its former self in those first 300 years. The spiritual temple of God is given far to many alternatives to choose from in how they worship, where they worship, when they worship, and what to hold as truth and interpretations of these truths. Like the Holy Roman Church, some have sought to chain the Word of God to meet their own agenda’s. Now I am not saying that it’s a wrong thing to have choices in denominations, since most have their origins created around cultural diversity and newly gained freedoms to worship without government suppression. But simply stating that in the fast number of these choices, the spiritual temple of God that we are, have become separated from the true purpose of being a personal, spiritual and physical temple of God. Which is, that we are the church, and not the building we attend each Sunday to worship in.

Matthew 24:1-2
As Jesus was leaving the Temple grounds, his disciples pointed out to him the various Temple buildings. [2] But he told them, "Do you see all these buildings? I assure you, they will be so completely demolished that not one stone will be left on top of another!"

Hebrews 3:1-4
And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are bound for heaven, think about this Jesus whom we declare to be God's Messenger and High Priest. [2] For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully and was entrusted with God's entire house. [3] But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a fine house deserves more praise than the house itself. [4] For every house has a builder, but God is the one who made everything.

2 Tim. 2:1-9
Timothy, my dear son, be strong with the special favor God gives you in Christ Jesus. [2] You have heard me teach many things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Teach these great truths to trustworthy people who are able to pass them on to others. [3] Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. [4] And as Christ's soldier, do not let yourself become tied up in the affairs of this life, for then you cannot satisfy the one who has enlisted you in his army. [5] Follow the Lord's rules for doing his work, just as an athlete either follows the rules or is disqualified and wins no prize. [6] Hardworking farmers are the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor. [7] Think about what I am saying. The Lord will give you understanding in all these things. [8] Never forget that Jesus Christ was a man born into King David's family and that he was raised from the dead. This is the Good News I preach. [9] And because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained.

2 Peter 3:5-16
They deliberately forget that God made the heavens by the word of his command, and he brought the earth up from the water and surrounded it with water. [6] Then he used the water to destroy the world with a mighty flood. [7] And God has also commanded that the heavens and the earth will be consumed by fire on the day of judgment, when ungodly people will perish.
[8] But you must not forget, dear friends, that a day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. [9] The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise to return, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to perish, so he is giving more time for everyone to repent. [10] But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and everything in them will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be exposed to judgment.
[11] Since everything around us is going to melt away, what holy, godly lives you should be living! [12] You should look forward to that day and hurry it along—the day when God will set the heavens on fire and the elements will melt away in the flames. [13] But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world where everyone is right with God. [14] And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to live a pure and blameless life. And be at peace with God.
[15] And remember, the Lord is waiting so that people have time to be saved. This is just as our beloved brother Paul wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him— [16] speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters around to mean something quite different from what he meant, just as they do the other parts of Scripture—and the result is disaster for them.

I am the Church of Christ

The development of the Church of Christ throughout history has shown us its strengths and its weakness. One may say that the weakness is related to the focus the church took on building monuments to God, and the strengths is the personal freedoms we have gained in our worship of God and the choices we have in the many denominations of the Christian church we have around the world. The real error we make today is holding to much reverence to the physical buildings and earthly temples we attend and call our church rather then give the reverence to our personal temples of God, the spiritual temple that is truly housed in each and everyone of us. Once we return to this spiritual temple within us, respect that temple by refusing to contaminate it with the pollution of sin that weaken the foundations of God’s temple, and unchain God words so that its true purpose is revealed once again. When we free ourselves from the materialistic foundations of brick and mortar, can we once again become the true church, the “I am the Church of Christ” and were ever I go, live, work or meet in fellowship; the Church of Christ goes. The brick and mortar church will only be a fellowship hall where I join together with other individual Churches of Christ, sharing God’s love and living the social model God created for us. Only then can I the original church be restored to its glorious beginnings as Christ and his Father wanted for us.

A movement is afoot in these later years, where the brick and mortar materialistic church is shifting toward changing the emphasis of being called a church to something along the lines of just being a center for fellowship, where even having your morning cup of coffee in the sanctuary is not sacrilegious while your sip and hear the Word of God. They attempt to unchain the image of religious sacraments and reverence given to the earthly and inner sanctum of God by offering a more open and heartfelt method of worship that allows the individual believer to become a personal spiritual and physical temple of God within the brick and mortar realm of earthly temples. These groups are reaching new converts where older traditional churches are failing in gaining growth, while they grow and establish themselves as non-traditional churches. I see this as a journey down the right path toward spiritual growth of the church within us.

However, I have only one warning, were they might succeed in unchaining themselves from the brick and mortar, I fear that unless they instill within each believer a firm reverence of their own holiness as a personal spiritual and physical temple of God. I fear that they through this breaking down of the brick and mortar may endanger the personal spiritual and physical temple of God to a weakness that comes with the generalization or modern irrelevance they give brick and mortar. In doing so, they often trade off on a style of worship that though intellectual is rather neutral and bland failing to fire up the Holy Spirit in us to give our personal spiritual and physical temple the fuel to resist the same generalization and irrelevance that we are in danger of treating sin in the world around.

It is through our relationship with God as that personal spiritual and physical temple that we know the cost of sin and how it destroy’s God’s temple. If we as a believer chose to accept a style of worship that does not challenge our walk in Christ, nor instill in us the fear of God. Then we are taking a safe route through a very wide valley indeed, where we can easily skirt around sensitive issues on morality and the modern and contemporary views we find many churches are taking today. Without this personal conviction of God’s word to build the church that is ourselves, and without the fire of the Holy Spirit to lead us, we are at best serving our own interest and not Gods. When serving our own interest, we serve the flesh and not the spirit, though we may attend the brick and mortar church in our neighborhood, it is merely a temple we leave behind when we return home. The personal spiritual and physical temple of God remains as just a ghost of ourselves which we greet each Sunday, and they say goodbye to when we leave that earthly temple of brick and mortar each week.

1 Cor. 3:15-18
But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builders themselves will be saved, but like someone escaping through a wall of flames. [16] Don't you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? [17] God will bring ruin upon anyone who ruins this temple. For God's temple is holy, and you Christians are that temple. [18] Stop fooling yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world's standards, you will have to become a fool so you can become wise by God's standards.

1 Cor. 6:18-20
Run away from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. [19] Or don't you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, [20] for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

2 Cor. 3:5-6
It is not that we think we can do anything of lasting value by ourselves. Our only power and success come from God. [6] He is the one who has enabled us to represent his new covenant. This is a covenant, not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old way ends in death; in the new way, the Holy Spirit gives life.

Ephes. 1:11-13
Furthermore, because of Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us from the beginning, and all things happen just as he decided long ago. [12] God's purpose was that we who were the first to trust in Christ should praise our glorious God. [13] And now you also have heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.

Ephes. 2:17-22
He has brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and to us Jews who were near. [18] Now all of us, both Jews and Gentiles, may come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us. [19] So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God's holy people. You are members of God's family. [20] We are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. [21] We who believe are carefully joined together, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. [22] Through him you Gentiles are also joined together as part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.

Ephes. 3:18-21
And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is. [19] May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God. [20] Now glory be to God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope. [21] May he be given glory in the church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever through endless ages. Amen.

2 Thes. 2:13-17
As for us, we always thank God for you, dear brothers and sisters loved by the Lord. We are thankful that God chose you to be among the first to experience salvation, a salvation that came through the Spirit who makes you holy and by your belief in the truth. [14] He called you to salvation when we told you the Good News; now you can share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. [15] With all these things in mind, dear brothers and sisters, stand firm and keep a strong grip on everything we taught you both in person and by letter.
[16] May our Lord Jesus Christ and God our Father, who loved us and in his special favor gave us everlasting comfort and good hope, [17] comfort your hearts and give you strength in every good thing you do and say.

John 16:5-14
"But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and none of you has asked me where I am going. [6] Instead, you are very sad. [7] But it is actually best for you that I go away, because if I don't, the Counselor won't come. If I do go away, he will come because I will send him to you. [8] And when he comes, he will convince the world of its sin, and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment. [9] The world's sin is unbelief in me. [10] Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. [11] Judgment will come because the prince of this world has already been judged. [12] "Oh, there is so much more I want to tell you, but you can't bear it now. [13] When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas; he will be telling you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. [14] He will bring me glory by revealing to you whatever he receives from me.

Romans 8:5-11
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. [6] If your sinful nature controls your mind, there is death. But if the Holy Spirit controls your mind, there is life and peace. [7] For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God's laws, and it never will. [8] That's why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. [9] But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them are not Christians at all.) [10] Since Christ lives within you, even though your body will die because of sin, your spirit is alive because you have been made right with God. [11] The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as he raised Christ from the dead, he will give life to your mortal body by this same Spirit living within you.

If we are the church, the personal spiritual and physical temple of God, then we are also the vessel of the Holy Spirit, and the good works of the fruits and Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we carry with us out of and from the brick and mortar temple into our homes and communities the spiritual temple of God each and everyday of our lives until the good Lord comes and brings us to our heavenly reward. If this vessel is leaving the brick and mortar temple empty, they I would question as to why this is so? For the empty vessel has no armor against the evil of the world, nor does it serves God’s purpose as a personal spiritual and physical temple, the true church, the bearer of God’s Holy spirit, the fruits and gifts of the church.

Galatians 5:19-25
When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, your lives will produce these evil results: sexual immorality, impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, [20] idolatry, participation in demonic activities, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, divisions, the feeling that everyone is wrong except those in your own little group, [21] envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other kinds of sin. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
[22] But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, and self-control. Here there is no conflict with the law.
[24] Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. [25] If we are living now by the Holy Spirit, let us follow the Holy Spirit's leading in every part of our lives.

1 Cor. 12:1-31
And now, dear brothers and sisters, I will write about the special abilities the Holy Spirit gives to each of us, for I must correct your misunderstandings about them. [2] You know that when you were still pagans you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. [3] So I want you to know how to discern what is truly from God: No one speaking by the Spirit of God can curse Jesus, and no one is able to say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
[4] Now there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all. [5] There are different kinds of service in the church, but it is the same Lord we are serving. [6] There are different ways God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the work through all of us. [7] A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church. [8] To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another he gives the gift of special knowledge. [9] The Spirit gives special faith to another, and to someone else he gives the power to heal the sick. [10] He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and to another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to know whether it is really the Spirit of God or another spirit that is speaking. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, and another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. [11] It is the one and only Holy Spirit who distributes these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

[12] The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up only one body. So it is with the body of Christ. [13] Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into Christ's body by one Spirit, and we have all received the same Spirit. [14] Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. [15] If the foot says, "I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand," that does not make it any less a part of the body. [16] And if the ear says, "I am not part of the body because I am only an ear and not an eye," would that make it any less a part of the body? [17] Suppose the whole body were an eye—then how would you hear? Or if your whole body were just one big ear, how could you smell anything? [18] But God made our bodies with many parts, and he has put each part just where he wants it. [19] What a strange thing a body would be if it had only one part! [20] Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. [21] The eye can never say to the hand, "I don't need you." The head can't say to the feet, "I don't need you."
[22] In fact, some of the parts that seem weakest and least important are really the most necessary. [23] And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect from the eyes of others those parts that should not be seen, [24] while other parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together in such a way that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. [25] This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other equally. [26] If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad.
[27] Now all of you together are Christ's body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it. [28] Here is a list of some of the members that God has placed in the body of Christ:

first are apostles,
second are prophets,
third are teachers,
then those who do miracles,
those who have the gift of healing,
those who can help others,
those who can get others to work together,
those who speak in unknown languages.

[29] Is everyone an apostle? Of course not. Is everyone a prophet? No. Are all teachers? Does everyone have the power to do miracles? [30] Does everyone have the gift of healing? Of course not. Does God give all of us the ability to speak in unknown languages? Can everyone interpret unknown languages? No! [31] And in any event, you should desire the most helpful gifts.

The church is the embodiment of all that God is, and as his personal spiritual and physical temple, we can be no less, nor should we desire less but to fulfill God’s desires in our daily lives and the church that we are. The early church was such a embodiment of Christ. The renaissance of the Holy Roman church drifted away from this embodiment of Christ and the Post renaissance made great effort to redefine itself as God wanted for the church. Today, we are taking even closer looks at how we need to reform and revitalize the brick and mortar temples so that they create believers who are the true church. We need to take care that we don’t put the right focus in the wrong place, fix that which is broken, and that which works, align it with God’s truths, and fortify it with the strength of the Holy Spirit. Teach the tools, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit to each and every singular church that we are, so that they may thrive on their own with the full of armor of God in place firmly on their shoulders each and every day while home, at work, at play, and at worship in each and every community in Gods name.

Amen
